Epitome® Scalpel Blade

Epitome is a sterile scalpel blade designed for precision surgery in plastic surgery and multiple other surgical specialties. The cutting edge consists of a very thin tungsten wire embedded in the ceramic scalpel blade. The energy is concentrated in the edge while the blade sides remain cool. Epitome provides an exact incision with minimal hemostasis and smoke gas generation.

Models

Flexible handles and various lengths of blades and handles provide optimal access to narrow surgical fields.

Usage

Epitome is recommended for 10-20 watts of output power and can be used in pure Cut, Blend, or Coag mode depending on the desired amount of hemostasis. Epitome can also be used for spray or contact coagulation. The blade does not burn into tissue and is easy to keep clean during long surgeries. It can also be used in adipose tissue.

Clinical Studies

It has been shown that incisions made with Epitome heal with high strength and minimal scarring (Annals of Plastic Surgery 2002; 49:635-645). A Swedish evaluation was conducted on 5735 surgical procedures performed with Epitome by 33 specialist surgeons. Surgeons rated various parameters where scores of 4 and 5 were considered top ratings. 95% of surgeons rated the 0.2 mm model as top-rated for tissue quality of the incision surface and cutting speed, compared to 82% and 73% for the 0.4 mm model, respectively. Both models received top ratings from most surgeons, but results showed that the 0.2 mm blade is superior when high incision quality and speed are desired. 90% of surgeons gave the 0.4 mm blade top ratings for hemostasis compared to 55% for the 0.2 mm model, indicating that the 0.4 mm blade provides better hemostasis. No impact of wire diameter on cutting in adipose tissue was noted, as 70% of surgeons gave top ratings for this parameter regardless of the model.

Product Reviews

“Epitome enables excellent precision, provides wound surfaces with minimal bleeding, and minimal coagulation necrosis macroscopically.”

“The main advantages of Epitome are its superior cutting properties, reduced surgery time, and faster and better hemostasis. I highly recommend Epitome to my other urology colleagues.”
